It is an Old Testament historical narrative that ultimately points us to God’s provision for His people in Christ. Ruth did her work as unto God and not for the applause of others and in the end, she reaped benefits that she could not have ever imagined (Col 3:23-24). We see in this those Gentiles who did leave their lands to join with Israel because they recognized in Israel the revelation of the one true God. Now, unless you understand what you’re doing with the Bible, you’re going to be completely at sea. Don’t do anything in your life that you cannot go straight home and tell your mother about. Although marriage turns out to be part of the deal in Ruth, there is no proper analogy, culturally or exegetically, between the role Ruth plays on the threshing floor and a 21st-century woman initiating a date or romantic relationship with a guy. Before Tristan and Isolde, before Romeo and Juliet, and even before Mr. Darcy and Miss Elizabeth of Pride and Prejudice, there were Boaz and Ruth.Their love story, dating from approximately 1000 BC, is still powerfully relevant in the twenty-first century. Therefore, that is why, as we trace our line through here, it’s very important for us to recognize that behind this process here, behind this unfolding drama—and certainly this is the high point of the story of Ruth here in chapter 3—behind these highly unusual actions, what we discover is a sincere trust in Yahweh’s care and protection. In fact, he couldn’t even rest until the matter was properly settled (3:18). After all, he knows her motives, she trusts his integrity, everyone else is asleep. CLAIM: After Boaz lay down, the text says that Ruth “uncovered his feet and lay down” with him. You see, also, to take all of the kind of sensuality out of this, all of the sort of twenty-first-century-and-post sexuality—the idea of Ruth going down to the threshing floor, sort of strutting her stuff, you know, all dressed up to the nines and ready for action—is just nowhere in the passage. I just thought that was interesting; I thought I’d point it out. For those of you who are visiting, we’re studying in the evenings in this little book of Ruth, which takes us back some three thousand years in history. And also, you recognize that Naomi wasn’t one of these old women who grudge younger women the comforts and advantages which they themselves are now too old to enjoy or to relish. In fact, a much closer modern analogy would be a woman who asks her father (or another male Christian relative, or a pastor or couple in her church) to provide oversight and protection for her by vetting potential suitors, providing counsel during a dating relationship and helping see her through to marriage. It makes me think of somebody.” Yeah, it’s making you think of somebody. So let’s start reading that scene in verse 6. It turns out that Boaz knew of another relative who was ahead of him in line to buy Elimelech’s land from Naomi and take responsibility for Ruth, so he informed the other relative. And if yes, then it asks the final question: Am I seeking to exhibit in my dealings with others such a spirit of generous love that I am reflecting the character of he who has wooed me and won me? He is a good and a shrewd judge of character. It’s a reminder to us as well that everything that is described in the Bible is not prescribed in the Bible. But it’s the best decision in light of the undesirability of the factors that are presented. And so Naomi doesn’t embitter herself with the fact that she’s no longer marriable, with the fact that she no longer will enjoy the privileges of marital relationships. Common sense. Ruth didn’t know but beyond “Wash your face, put on your clothes, put some perfume on, uncover his feet, and then take it from there.”[4] That’s not exactly what you would call a rock-solid plan, is it? Boaz knew that there was a closer relative who had “first dibs” in redeeming Ruth (3:12-13). And she was vulnerable also in relationship to her motives. As we reflect on the compassion of Boaz for Ruth, certainly it was … Father, we thank you for the Bible. And “in the middle of the night”—verse 8—“something startled the man, and he turned [over] and [he] discovered a woman lying at his feet. Thank you. The concealment from the population is not a concealment from Naomi. No, they don’t. Amen. In fact, they didn’t go very far before the message was, “He will tell you what to do.”[3] So on the strength of the word of Naomi, trusting in the providence of God, she proceeds with the plan. He’s watched this woman. Dialogue in the darkness. All rights reserved. Therefore, NO, Boaz did NOT “take her” that night. As you mention in your question, it can appear at first glance like Ruth provides an example of a woman initiating a romantic relationship with a man in a way that “liberates” godly women from the sometimes frustrating position of waiting on Christian men to show initiative and leadership in potential dating relationships. In the context of the book, Boaz is Ruth’s kinsmen redeemer. The friend is not making decisions on the basis of their existence as to how it will impact them primarily but as to how it will be an encouragement to their friend. But there’s a problem. And so discretion is the better part of valor. We know that when she was instructed to head to the threshing floor to meet Boaz. Then instead of sitting in a pool of pity, agonizing over your own loss, recognize that this friend of your mother’s has also had a great loss, and you may now show your esteem and affection for your mother by caring most directly for the one who is also aware of loss. Yet it is set in dark times: the final verse of the book of Judges, which precedes Ruth in the Bible, tells us that “in those days Israel had no king; everyone did as he saw fit.” As one commentator writes, the time was marked by “violent invasions, apostate religion, unchecked lawlessness, and tribal civil war.” It is against this backdrop of strife and chaos that Ruth’s story unfolds—a story of ordinary people in Bethlehem facing everyday events, from loss and dislocation to marriage and family life.
